I Heart Joanna Gaines
Last month we at Curated Nest were inspired by one of our great design idols and supermamas, Joanna Gaines of Magnolia Home and HGTV’s Fixer Upper. We’ve been in love with pretty much everything she’s done for years, and now with her 5th baby, Crew, she’s outdone herself again. Ahem, behold the nursery:
Typical Joanna - it’s elegant and understated, but with a big personality. It’s not easy to create a gorgeous room using exclusively soft, neutral tones, and the key is texture and more texture. Between the tassel rug, the iron crib, the warm wood of the dresser and the worn wood of her re-purposed hutch (which she previously used for glassware!), Joanna beautifully uses texture to create little wow moments everywhere. The overall effect is a serene space with tons of style – perfect for your “average” superstar mom of five, LOL.
But Joanna’s not the only one who wants a relaxing, serene nursery. We think her style reflects a common desire to create a quiet cozy space to bond with our babies. Especially in those initial months of no sleep, where anything can irritate you…spouses be warned!
So, drumroll please, that’s why we designed our latest gender neutral “I Heart Joanna” nursery. We couldn’t help but share our love for all things boho, eclectic, and farmhouse chic with our own version of baby Crew’s nursery as a tribute to mama Jo. AND as a shortcut to a picture perfect nursery for your little one.
It’s designed with you in mind. All the furniture is meant to grow with your baby, because, we gotta be practical and kids furniture really should last for more than a year or two. The Abigail Iron Crib converts to a toddler bed and the Palma Dresser has nothing babyish about it. You can just set a changing pad on top and you’re good to go. The rocker is petite like Joanna’s, which saves valuable floor space for playing and is sleek enough to keep in the room or re-purpose in your living room or office later.
We had to include mama Jo’s signature farmhouse shiplap even though she didn’t, and to keep things simple, we used convenient removable wallpaper (great if you’re renting). I actually have this wallpaper up in my house and it is aah-maaayyy-zing. Everyone thinks it’s real wood!! As a nod to Joanna’s boho influences, we selected a rug and blankets that are all super textured, with tassels, pom poms, and fringe galore. (Slight obsession with fringe here, k?) Developmental bonus points, mamas – babies love feeling new textures, especially around the 6 month mark.
And we’ll take all the wall shelves, thank you very much. By putting books on display facing out, you encourage your little one to interact with them. If you’re into children’s books like I am, you know the artistry that goes into cover illustration is just stunning! (Foreshadowing…we’ll be sharing some of our fave books soon in a collab with boutique publisher Cameron Kids.)
We also loved the rich paint color she used, which FYI is: Garden Trowel by Magnolia Home, available at Target. Don’t be afraid to go with a darker tone mamas! Just be sure to offset it with lighter accessories or furniture to balance it out. And BTW, babies love high contrast, so, you win.
